Every year, many SaaS startups emerge with ambitious goals but modest means. Most of them disappear in a span of two years, and seldom due to a bad idea. 1. Building Without Validating the Problem First<\/h3>\n

No matter what research is done on startup post-mortems, the “no market need” always comes up as one of the top reasons that cause startups to fail. Entrepreneurs get in love with their solution and forget to make sure that there is actually a need for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk to 15 to 20 people in the target audience before writing any line of code and see how they solve the problem now, how much it costs them, and what solutions they have used so far. Test the need through a waiting list, a paid pilot, or a pre-sale. If there is no response, that means something new was learned for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2. Overloading the MVP With Too Many Features<\/h3>\n

3. Choosing the Wrong Tech Stack and Architecture<\/h3>\n

Chasing a framework simply because it’s in vogue is one of the most common and expensive practices out there. Choosing a proper stack will depend on a variety of factors \u2013 your team’s experience, ease of recruiting, maturity of its environment and speed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Proven boring technology wins here quite frequently. Equally critical is an architectural approach. Multi-tenant systems, good APIs and modularity make the development process much easier. A hurried rework once the system is deployed will cost several months of hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

4. Ignoring Scalability Until It’s Too Late<\/h3>\n

You do not need to think about building something for a million users on the first day itself, but what you do need is to have a plan in place. Nothing is as bad as having a product crash while being mentioned in your first ever press release or customer launch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of starting out with cloud-based architecture and cache jobs, queue jobs, database indexes, and all the other things you will need for performance from the beginning itself. You should be able to monitor the performance yourself and not the user.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5. Treating Security and Compliance as an Afterthought<\/h3>\n

Business customers will first inquire about security than inquire about the features. The security questionnaire, SOC 2 report, GDPR and HIPPA compliance can cause the sales process to take a few months if you are not prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n
